Old with the new

I shot the new AIPM upgrade at Collins Beach at the North Head in Manly a few weeks ago with Brewster Hjorth Architects. It’s a stunning location and the design reflects the Institutional, Military and Police Heritage of the site whilst minimising the impact on sensitive ecological zones.

For history buffs, the site was established in the early 1800’ s as a sailors quarantine base, in 1960 the Seaman’s Isolation Hospital was converted to a police training centre. It sits adjacent Arthur Phillip’s first landing-place, it includes original heritage structures and an archaeologically important roadway built to carry cannons to North Head. The site is home to the last North Head Penguin rookery and Banded Bandicoot habitat.
