Ain’t no churches here…

Although I wasn’t there for long I still managed to satisfy my wanderlust and take these Hipstamatic shots.  Adelaide is known as the city of churches but for some reason I didn’t capture any. Next time I’m sure…

We did catch up with our good friends Danny and Innez who run Adelaide’s Top Food and Wine tours though. Great tour of Central Markets Saturday for breakfast!

As Promised…

So as promised I can now unveil the shots we took for Stevie English’s Hair Salon.  They’re definitely a very talented group of hairdressers. And as always, LOVE working with the extremely talented Verity Griffiths, Creative Director Extraordinaire!!

Look out for the film clip, and magazine articles. The Orchard studio was rockin’ that day!

Tips for for shooting inside Parliament

I know what you’re thinking…. is this the new female speaker for the South Australian Parliament? One would hope that’s what this young lady is doing here but alas, no!

Whilst I was off shooting the Honorable Bob Such MP on the steps of the SA Parliament, instead of doing her job, my assistant was sitting in the speaker’s chair in the Chamber of Parliament taking photos of herself!  Luckily security found it amusing and have seen a lot worse.

On a more serious note, Angela was a great assistant and we got some wonderful images for an inspiring book project we are working on with the team at Ethical Strategies. Details soon to be released!~

Shooting at the beach with the Schneider 120TS lens

I took my new favourite lens, the SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH 120 mm TS f/5.6 Aspherical  to the coast to test, courtesy of a loan from L+P Photographics.  Check out the beautiful flare it gives when shooting into or nearly into the light. Magic! Also I had fun swinging the lens (does this make me a ‘swinger’?) so that the plane of focus runs into the image (as opposed to parallel with the film plane normally). Is it just me, or is it a bit more evocative?? With this quality of optics on a medium format state of the art 80 Megapixel camera,  I can see some stunning large format fine art prints coming up!

Schlepping with Schneider

The good folks at L+P Photographics and Phase One gave me a Schneider Kreuznach 120mm tilt shift lens to try last week on my medium format digital system.  I tested it out with my Phase One IQ180 80 Megapixel digital back on a mini food shoot.  My verdict: yep I love it! I have other tilt shift lenses but the sharpness really was remarkable, the German glass gives the image a crisp quality from edge to edge. Some lenses show sharpness through contrast, but this one is through the glass and within the image. Of course the tilt and shift are great for changing your plane of focus also. I have to buy one now!!

Bold & Beautiful

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I took my Phase One down to Manly this morning at dawn to get some inspiring shots.  I was pleasantly surprised to see the notorious Bold & Beautiful swimmers I’d heard so much about. They were decked out in pink speedos and pink hats swimming from the south end of Manly beach to Shelley beach, a 1.5km swim.

Seeing all the fit bodies on the beach made me wish that I went to the beach more often and that I went for a swim after my photo sessions. Shame my camera wasn’t waterproof.

Old with the new

I shot the new AIPM upgrade at Collins Beach at the North Head in Manly a few weeks ago with Brewster Hjorth Architects. It’s a stunning location and the design reflects the Institutional, Military and Police Heritage of the site whilst minimising the impact on sensitive ecological zones.

For history buffs, the site was established in the early 1800’ s as a sailors quarantine base, in 1960 the Seaman’s Isolation Hospital was converted to a police training centre. It sits adjacent Arthur Phillip’s first landing-place, it includes original heritage structures and an archaeologically important roadway built to carry cannons to North Head. The site is home to the last North Head Penguin rookery and Banded Bandicoot habitat.
