A Hair Affair To Remember…

I had a pretty crazy and amazing shoot last week with Stevie English Hair. The shots were ultra sexy and edgy, Verity, the very talented art director/stylist went all out on the concept. Unfortunately I can’t unveil any of the shots until June after the judging of Australia’s Hair Expo so here’s a shot from the 2010 expo, also shot with Verity. Stay tuned…

Camera Tips for Shooting Flare

A magical evening at Dee Why beach yesterday. I had some fun with flare as you can see.

I was recently asked how I achieve this, so here are a few tips;

Technical: I shoot wide open using the lowest aperture my lens will allow (usually f 1.2) and I often shoot in Aperture Priority mode (AV) and underexpose by a stop.

Composition: Compose your shot with the sun directly behind your subject. I love capturing the sun’s reflections bouncing off different surfaces, flare into the lens, and different textures and contrast it produces. Also the way the sun back lights and interacts with my subject adds extra magic!

Summer’s apparently here so I dragged myself out of bed at 5am and headed to Curl Curl beach, I’m hoping my shots with the 80MB Phase One back turned out as good as these Hipstamatic ones. It was such a lovely morning I didn’t want to leave.

Walking along Balmoral with a coffee after yoga yesterday morning, the first day of summer, I came upon this girl in the bushes below the apartment block on the beach. Wonder what wild scenes above led to her ending up down here.

Shanghai in Willoughby

We shot for McDonald’s China recently with the lovely people from Leo Burnett’s Shanghai. The shoot was done in our new eco sustainable studio “The Orchard” in Willoughby.

We had fun shooting daylight, using light from 2 sides, balancing a sun that was forever moving in and out of clouds, shining directly and indirectly onto different windows as the days progressed. There were fevered skype calls to Shanghai in Cantonese as the creative team was constantly liaising with the client. All good in the end, and the client was happy with the ‘natural and real’ feel of the shots.

Ahhhh all this rainy weather is making me want to curl up and watch a good movie, thankfully it’s not meant to last long and people are saying we’re in for a long, hot summer. Here’s hoping!!

A big thank you to everyone who came down to support me at the Sydney Art Show. It was inspiring to be surrounded by so many talented folk and to get such positive feedback. My calming romantic seascapes generated a-lot of interest, and a few sales. Drop into the studio if you want to see the collection first hand! The large artworks really create a mood in the room.
